The Greatest Free Show on Earth

What Are the Blackpool Illuminations?

The Blackpool Illuminations are an annual lights festival that transforms the Lancashire seaside resort into a dazzling spectacle every autumn and winter. Stretching for 6 miles along the Promenade from Starr Gate to Bispham, the display features over one million LED bulbs, 3D tableaux, laser shows, and interactive installations.

First switched on in 1879 to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, the Illuminations have grown into one of Britain's most iconic seasonal events — attracting millions of visitors each year and earning the nickname "The Greatest Free Show on Earth."

2026 Dates & Switch-On

When do the Blackpool Illuminations start?

The 2026 Blackpool Illuminations are expected to begin on Friday 28th August 2026 with the annual Switch-On event, typically held on the Tower Festival Headland in front of Blackpool Tower. The lights usually run through to early January 2027, giving visitors several months to enjoy the display.

Daily Switch-On Time

The lights are switched on at approximately 9:00 PM each evening. During autumn half-term and the Christmas period, they may illuminate earlier (around 5:00 PM) to accommodate families.

Switch-Off Time

Displays are turned off at 11:00 PM on weeknights and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. During peak weekends and school holidays, some sections may stay lit until 1:00 AM.

Exact dates for 2026 will be confirmed by Blackpool Council closer to the season. We recommend checking the official Visit Blackpool website for the latest announcements.

Best Viewing Tips

Walk the Full 6 Miles

The complete display runs from Starr Gate in the south to Bispham in the north. Walking the full route takes around 2 hours and lets you see every tableau and installation.

Take the Illuminated Tram

Blackpool's Heritage Trams run special illuminated tours along the Promenade. It's a cosy way to see the lights — especially on chilly evenings — and avoids parking headaches.

Visit Mid-Week for Quieter Streets

Friday and Saturday nights are busiest. Tuesday through Thursday evenings offer a more relaxed experience with easier parking and shorter queues at attractions.

Stop at the Tableaux & Features

Don't miss the famous Blackpool tableaux on the Cliffs at Bispham, the interactive light displays near the Tower, and the stunning 3D projections on buildings along the Promenade.

Dress for the Weather

Blackpool's sea breeze can be cold in autumn and winter. Bring warm coats, scarves and comfortable walking shoes. An umbrella is wise — the lights shine rain or shine.

Combine with the Fireworks

During September and October, Blackpool hosts spectacular firework displays from the Tower Headland on select Friday evenings — perfectly timed to coincide with the Illuminations.
